Norman Passes New Ordinance On Mask Requirements

The Norman City Council passed a new mask mandate July 8.

Norman Mayor Breea Clark said that the vote signifies that community resident lives are worth fighting for. The mandate overwhelmingly passed 8 to 1 and is effective immediately.

The new ordinance requires face masks to be worn inside business that serve people as well as other public settings where distancing is difficult.

Some exceptions include kids under the age of six, people with disabilities, those swimming or doing intense activity, and anyone who's eating or drinking.

The city said they will make signs for businesses about the mandate and owners will be required to post those.

Clark said she hopes the city is setting a precedent.

"I hope other mayors are listening. I hope Governor Stitt is listening because by God, if Texas can do it, we can too," Clark said.

OU Medicine experts recommend everyone wears a mask in public.

Governor Stitt said he will leave it to each individual to decide.
