Thursday officers arrested a man as he walked out of a Sapulpa store, wearing a mask, gloves, and holding a bag of cash.

Customers told police Trentin Richardson walked in the store, locked the door behind him, pulled out a gun, fired a shot into the ceiling, then demanded people's cell phones and money from the safe.

“Knowing you’re getting robbed is one thing. You get scared. Seeing the guy actually pull out a gun and shoot the gun has to take it to that next level,” said Sapulpa Captain Glenn Coffey.

Captain Coffey said police are normally called out to robberies after the fact, but this time was different because someone immediately ran to the back office and called 911.

“This time we were fortunate to have that employee in the back that was able to sit there and look at the surveillance camera and be able to provide that information without being right in the middle of everything that was going on," said Captain Coffey.

Creek County deputies and Sapulpa police got to the scene so quickly because a person called 911 during the robbery and described the suspect to officers.

"He admitted to it. Basically, he said that he was trying to provide for his family," said Captain Coffey. “It just so happens that he is an employee for dollar general at another location here in Sapulpa.”

Coffey said even during hard times, crimes isn't the answer.

“To me it comes down to their character. Even as bad as it gets. And I understand you’re going to do what you need to do to provide for your kids, but most people who even have that thought have that moral compass," said Captain Coffey.

Richardson is currently being held at the Creek County jail on three counts of first-degree robbery.
