TULSA, Okla. - College baseball players would be playing in select regionals, eyeing a chance at playing in Omaha at the college world series if the pandemic hadn’t stopped the season.

However, there is still baseball going on right here in Tulsa with some of the area's top players.

It may not have happened without former Kentucky player Gunnar Glad's Sandlot Baseball.

"These guys got their spring cut short, and all these leagues are canceling. A lot of these leagues are having trouble. A lot of host families don't want random kids coming into their house with the whole COVID-19 thing going on, so we decided to step,” Gunner Glad said.

The top players in the Tulsa area didn't have a place to play this summer, so Glad put together a 25-game schedule. Some games take place in Springdale, Arkansas and some at La Fortune.

"We get a chance to put some smiles on faces and let everybody escape from the madness for a few hours a day,” Glad said.

Metro Christian alum and future Sooner Blake Shannon was set to play in Alaska this summer until that was halted. Coming off a hamstring injury, he said the pickup games are a blessing.

“Being able to come out here and get on the field and smell the cut grass, it’s surreal,” Shannon said.

Playing more than two-dozen games split between Tulsa and Springdale means ORU's Jake McMurray won’t be just in the batting cage as well.

"We are able to come out here and get some live ab's, and that’s really what it’s all about - just trying to see live pitching and trying to get back on the field,” McMurray said.
