State Education Officials To Consider Saturday School During Special Meeting

Thursday, May 28th 2020, 6:15 am

The State Board of Education will consider ideas on how to prepare for students to return to school in the fall during a special meeting Thursday morning.

The state's top education officials want to prevent massive closures like we've seen during the COVID-19 pandemic.

One idea state Superintendent Joy Hofmeister and others will consider is extending the school week, adding the option for Saturday school.

Hofmeister wants schools to prepare multiple calendars for the Fall, in case of another COVID-19 outbreak.

Another agenda item will be authorizing emergency certified teachers who are on track to get their teaching certification.

The board is also expected to discuss how to move forward with the plan to merge the Sovereign Community School with Santa Fe South Charter School.

The will also decide in the executive session whether to suspend Stillwater Junior High teacher Albert Morejon's certification. He was charged for making lewd proposals to a minor online. Officials said the victim was a former student of his.
