Domestic Violence Intervention Services launched a new texting service for victims in Green Country.

They hope it will make it easier for victims to report abuse.

DVIS said it's concerning seeing a lower number of reports since they're still preparing for a spike. That's why they're hoping people utilize this new texting service.

Chelsea Foreman is the assistant shelter director at Domestic Violence Intervention services.

Foreman said they're seeing the number of reports from domestic violence slowly increase as people are becoming more active as restrictions are lifted.

But the numbers are still not as high as they expected.

"We're expecting a tsunami affect with the absence we're seeing and lack of calls we're getting, we're anticipating we'll see a lot of survivors reaching out," Foreman said.

That's why Foreman said DVIS rushed to roll out a texting option for victims.

It's been available for a week.

All you have to do is text SAFE to 833-338-5763 and Foreman says an advocate will be ready to help.

"We are still getting the word out."

DVIS hopes the texting option makes it easier for people to get help who might not feel safe enough to make a phone call.

Lt. Clay Asbill with the Tulsa Police Family Violence unit said they often see an increase in domestic violence during warmer weather.

"We're always busy but right now we're on track for the last two years," Asbill said.

The new texting service is only available from 8 p.m. to 1 a.m. right now, but they always have a 24-hour crisis hotline.

They also offer virtual counseling and resources to victims who can't leave their homes.

"Our team is excited," Foreman said. "We know it's going to be a huge impact on the community."
