Wednesday is the first day of the Reconciliation in America symposium, which is hosted by the John Hope Franklin Center.
The event will be entirely virtual for the first time because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
The John Hope Franklin Center said this year’s theme, coincidentally, discusses how to use technology to work toward racial and social reconciliation.
Organizers said they started planning for an online symposium back in March after realizing the COVID-19 impact might stop them from having an in-person event.
The event chair, Dr. DeWayne Dickens, said relying more on technology allowed them to recruit internationally and get even more people signed up for the symposium.
“We look at the registrations, and we see people well beyond the Tulsa and Oklahoma area. We have expanded to Africa, China, Germany, [and] the United Kingdom” said Dickens.
