It’s been nearly a month since 26-year-old Taylor Lewis died in a work-related accident at Vance Air Force Base.

Lewis was a proud marine, and while Memorial Day is one for remembrance, the Moore community is helping the Lewis family move forward after the tragedy.

The Moore American Legion and VFW picks one veteran who has died in the last year to memorialize with a wreath-laying. This year, it was the man everyone called Big Lew.

“He’s very proud to be a marine and to have him honored as a marine in the community he loved is just an honor for us and an honor for him," said Sara Gurchinoff, Lewis’s girlfriend.

“It’s one of our own from Moore, here. Being able to honor him with his family here, is very special," said American Legion Post 184 Commander Michael Devenitch.

As the family remembered their son, brother and uncle, they’re also looking forward.

“We’re hoping that this is a good first step to starting to heal," said Lewis's sister Tori Leisinger.

The family said they’re working on starting a foundation in Lewis’s name to help the community he loved.

They’re already making shirts and hope to organize a golf tournament in the future.
