The Oklahoma City Fire Department is investigating a deadly apartment fire in northwest Oklahoma City.
The fire started at the Rockwell Terrace Apartments near North Rockwell Ave. and Melrose Lane. Fire officials said one person was found dead inside. They are now trying to find out what ignited the flames.
Firefighters responded around 11:30 Friday night. When they arrived, they saw heavy smoke and flames coming from the roof of the two-story apartment complex.
“The building that actually caught fire is in the center of the complex,” Shift Commander Jim Williams said. “It's an apartment that's above the offices and crews made an aggressive interior attack. We were able to put the fire out fairly quickly.”
Firefighters were alerted that someone may be inside and quickly began their search. Nikki Hernandez saw the flames and immediately called 9-1-1.
Hernandez tried to alert other residents to get out quickly.
“Everybody went back that way and it could have been a whole lot worse,” Hernandez said. "This whole apartment complex could have been on fire because everyone was doing their own thing. It was so quick, you didn't hear anything."
While performing a secondary search of the structure, firefighters found the body of an adult man in the bathroom.
“We have some preliminary ideas but the investigators are on scene and they're investigating the fire now along with (Oklahoma City Police Department) homicide unit,” Williams said.
Fire officials said the damage from the fire is valued at $110,000 and is considered a complete loss for that portion of the complex.
