Oklahoma Family's House Burns Down On Mother's Day

A family of nine is looking for a new home after a fire on Mother's Day.

Smoke and water damage from the fire ruined their home and it could have been much worse. 

The mom of six said with so many things they couldn't salvage, her family is the only thing keeping her going. 

It was supposed to be a happy day for Johna Johnson and her family.

She was heading home from the hospital on Mother's Day with her mom after her mom's successful open-heart surgery.

"Bringing her home, I was excited she was going to be here with me," she said.

She said they were almost home when her daughter called.

"My daughter called me and told me the house was on fire," she said.

Johnson said her four-year-old son found a lighter, went into her bedroom closet and lit her clothes on fire.

She said her son closed the door, which stopped it from spreading, but Sapulpa firefighters said it's a reminder to hide anything flammable from kids.

"The fire would have been really bad."

Landlord Kent Daniel said it's heartbreaking to see the home destroyed, but he's glad everyone got out alive.

"Life happens," Daniel said. "No one predicts it. You don't know what's going to happen tomorrow."

Johnson's family does not have renter's insurance and has been staying in a hotel since the fire thanks to help from the Red Cross. 

Now they're searching for a new home. 

Johnson said she's holding on to the little memories she can salvage.

"That's all I have, my family. They're together and no one's hurt," she said.
