The Arts Council is making sure kids young and old can still be creative, despite the pandemic. They are putting together arts kits full of all kinds of materials and lots of room for creativity.

“One of the things we normally do with our arts and schools initiative with all access arts is arts classes in schools and senior centers,” said Jillian Coker.

With art classes cancelled for COVID-19, Coker and her coworkers at the Arts Council had to get resourceful.

“We started this project called Art To-Go, where we fill supply bags for our various partner sites,” said Coker. “We want these bags to be filled with versatile items, so we have your basic stuff like paper, some kind of writing utensil and then we also do some fun stuff that you might not think of.”

The items come from the arts council's inventory or are ordered using the budget.

“We’re also making use of our arts supplies budget, so instead of paying for supplies to put into our schools, we’re taking that money and providing bags for homes.”

More than 100 bags have been delivered so far with more in production.

“Whether that’s a school or a senior living facility,” Coker said. “We delivered 100 bags to Positive Tomorrows, one of our partner sites.”

And the resulting creations can be shared with the hashtag: #AllAccessArts

“Especially right now when we feel trapped in our homes or confused about the world, about what’s going on, art is a way to express that. Whatever that emotion is, however you’re feeling about this pandemic, it’s OK and you get to express that in a way that feels good and productive.”
