Several local salons reopened within state regulations over the weekend, while others remained closed due to city mandates.

Cut Loose Hair Design in Midwest City reopened last week, with a long list of returning clients booking appointments quickly.

“As soon as we got the word, the phones started ringing. Cellphones, shop phones. I had 48 messages on my telephone here at the shop,” Cut Loose Hair Design owner Guy Dommert said.

In accordance with regulations and recommendations, Dommert and his staff are following several new sanitary guidelines

“We’re gowning. We’re wearing masks. We’re sanitizing our tools, between each service it’s sanitized,” Dommert said.

Dommert is also staggering staff and clients, to allow for distancing within the salon.

“We’re working late. A lot of my girls are working till 10 o’clock at night just trying to get their regular clients in,” Dommert said.

Despite the changes, Dommert said he is just thrilled just to be back to work.

“It’s been a very strange normal to get used to and I understand that it probably will be a normal for a while,” Dommert said.

Meanwhile, salon owners in Oklahoma City are waiting to return to work, as Mayor David Holt’s regulations don’t have personal care businesses reopening until the end of this week.

“When we were allowed to open, 30 minutes later we were told that’s not the case. That’s also frustrating. We just look to our leaders of our state to be on the same page,” Cake Salon owner Melinda Soward said.

Soward said differences between Mayor Dave Holt and Gov. Kevin Stitt’s orders have caused confusion and concern of losing clients to neighboring cities.

“We need to get back to work. We have livelihoods. We have families,” Soward said.

According to Soward, her staff is taking several steps to keep clients, including masks, staggering clients by appointment, and cleaning.

“We are doing everything and above what is necessary to stay sanitary and stay safe,” Soward said.
