Locally owned Steve's Sundry Books & Magazines has announced that the doors will close at 6 p.m. Dec. 31.

The store has been a Tulsa staple for 66 years.

"Our lease is coming up for renewal early 2014, and with the current flux of the book industry, I have decided it is now time to begin the next chapter in my life," owner Joanie Stephenson said in a statement.

Citing economic climate, daily changes in the publishing arena, and Internet buying culture, Stephenson said the bottom line on the financials made the decision for her.

Founded by F.W. "Steve" Stephenson, the store is in its second generation of the Stephenson family. Aside from featuring worldwide bestsellers to local authors, Steve's serves up old-fashioned malts, shakes and homemade sandwiches from the lunch counter just like they did in the 40s.

"This was not an easy decision," Stephenson said. "Steve's Sundry has been a part of the Tulsa fabric since 1947; we are an institution. Multi-generations of customers have grown up coming to Steve's to sit at the soda fountain. Hopefully, someone in Tulsa will be interested in purchasing the soda fountain so it's legacy will live on."

Steve's Sundry boasted the "largest magazine selection in the surrounding states," according to the company.

Located at 26th and Harvard, the store will operate as usual through Christmas Eve. Gift cards will be honored until closing on Dec. 24.

You can visit the Steve's Sundry Facebook page to leave well wishes or share your memories.
