Teenager shot after confronting police with BB gun

OKLAHOMA CITY -- A 13-year-old boy was shot in the hand Tuesday when he confronted a police officer with a weapon that turned out to be a BB gun, authorities said.

The shooting occurred about 4:15 p.m. when officer Aaron Ulman was responding to a report of a man chasing someone with a gun, said Capt. Steve McCool, spokesman for the Oklahoma City Police Department.

Ulman encountered a young man later identified as Fabian Gomez, 13, who had a bulge under his shirt near his waistline. Ulman ordered Gomez to put his hands in the air.

Instead, Gomez reached under his shirt and pulled out a gun, McCool said. Ulman fired his weapon, striking Gomez in the hand. The teen's weapon was later identified as a BB gun manufactured to look like a semiautomatic pistol.

Gomez was treated at the University of Oklahoma Medical Center and later charged with assault with a dangerous weapon.

Ulman was placed on routine administrative leave while the shooting is under investigation.

Six other juveniles were also arrested.

This incident marks the third officer-involved shooting in less than two weeks.
