OKLAHOMA CITY -- Animal control investigators are looking for the person who put a live puppy into a cardboard box and threw it into a dumpster outside an Oklahoma City apartment complex.

Luis Cifuentes, the grounds keeper at the Windsor Village Apartments near N.W. 23rd Street and Meridian Avenue, said he heard the dog crying Monday and rescued it from the dumpster. The puppy had been put in a box that was sealed with duct tape.

The 14-week old German Shepherd-Pitt Bull mix puppy was covered in her own excrement and rushed to a vet.

"I don't understand why people put her there," said Cifuentes.

He said he found another puppy, just like the dog he found Monday, in that same dumpster last month.

"For someone to put a puppy in a box…Tape the box shut and then throw it in a dumpster. That's up there," said Eric McCune with The Bella Foundation. "That's up there you know…For people who are abusing, neglecting animals that ranks high."

The puppy is now at a foster home and is in good condition. The family has named her Korey.

"She'll stay with us until the investigation is over and then once the investigation is over we'll find her a new home," said McCune.

Investigators say what's happened to Korey is a first for them so they're making a plea for anyone with any information to come forward before it happens again.

The Humane Society of the United States, along with the Oklahoma Alliance for Animals is offering a reward of $3,500 for information that leads to the arrest and conviction of the person responsible.
