OKLAHOMA CITY -- Oklahoma City police say a man killed a 1-year-old girl when he became frustrated and violently shook the baby.
Ahonesty Hicks' mother called 911 on the morning of Tuesday, May 3, when she discovered the little girl wasn't breathing. When officers arrived at the apartment at 2528 N. Kelley, they observed signs of child abuse on the baby.
Police questioned the mother's boyfriend, 21-year-old Deandre Wells. He told officers he had been alone with Ahonesty all night while her mother went to work. He also said she was sick that night. Wells claimed the child had vomited, fallen onto her face and hurt her lip.
Ahonesty was rushed to Children's Hospital. Doctors discovered the little girl had bleeding in her brain, bruises on her forehead and buttocks, and a busted lip. The treating physician told police the injuries were the result of abusive head trauma.
Officers returned to the apartment to question Wells. They said he confessed to becoming frustrated with Ahonesty. He told officers he violently shook her, then threw her to the living room floor. The little girl became ill a short time later.
Police initially arrested Wells on suspicious of child abuse. When Ahonesty died Tuesday night from her injuries, the charge against Wells was upgraded to first-degree murder.
Wells has a previous felony conviction for conspiracy to distribute a controlled substance.
