OKLAHOMA CITY -- Traffic at the Fort Smith Junction was snarled mid-day Wednesday due to an accident involving a semi-trailer loaded with explosives.

The truck was transporting 28,000 lbs. of explosive ordnance from the McAlester Army Ammunition Plant.

First responders had to wait for a team from Fort Sill to inspect the load and ensure it was safe to move.

I-40 westbound was shut down and traffic backed up for more than a mile for at least three hours.

The FAA closed airspace around the accident site until the danger could be assessed.

After almost four hours, a military official cleared the truck to move.

The accident was cleared and I-40 was re-opened late Wednesday afternoon.

Chalich Trucking, which owns the semi, did not want to comment on the incident.
