A family in southeast Oklahoma City was awakened early Friday morning by the warning sound of their smoke alarm.

Around 12:30 a.m., the family discovered their house near S.E. 44th Street and Bryant was filled with smoke and their living room was on fire. The man, his wife and stepson quickly got out of the house and called 911.

Firefighters arrived quickly and found flames roaring in part of the house. They extinguished the fire within minutes, but the flames and smoke caused significant damage throughout the house.

L.C. James owns the fire-damaged home. He said the family lost a lot of property and Christmas presents, but he's grateful everyone escaped unharmed. He said the house was insured, and the American Red Cross is helping the family.

Fire investigators are trying to determine what started the blaze.
