Firefighters now say a candle may have started a Tuesday morning fire that burned two homes in the 5700 block of N.W. 32nd Street.

The fire started around 4:30 a.m. in a two-story house. When crews arrived, fire had already engulfed the home. Witnesses said flames were shooting up to 20 feet in the air.

Strong winds whipped around embers, starting a fire at the house next door. Crews evacuated an elderly woman from the neighboring home and extinguished the fire, but her home did receive a lot of damage.

The blowing embers also set a tree on fire, but crews quickly put that out.

Fire investigators originally suspected arson may be involved because witnesses reported seeing three cars driving away from the house just moments before flames began shooting from the structure.  Investigators now say the people in those cars lived in the house.

No one was hurt in the fires.
