The second accident left a 24-year-old man critically injured. Police said there were two common factors among both victims in each crash. Those factors included being ejected from their vehicles and not wearing their seatbelts.

According to police, on February 20, Safari Belay McDoulett was killed after being ejected from her Toyota Sequoyah during a two-vehicle collision on Highway 9.

Norman police said 53-year-old Mark Allen Peters of Noble slammed his Dodge Ram pickup into McDoulett's Toyota. McDoulett, who police said was not wearing a seatbelt, was ejected from her car and killed. Peters was arrested on complaints of first-degree manslaughter, obstructing an officer, and possession of a controlled dangerous substance.

On February 22, Tanner Clouse, 24, was ejected from his 2012 Nissan Sentra. Police said it happened near Rock Creek Road and 24th Avenue N.E. when Clouse drove left of the road at a high speed and collided with a tree. Clouse is listed in critical condition in the intensive care unit at OU Medical Center. Investigators believe the vehicle's speed and possible driver impairment contributed to the crash, but they also believe that Clouse's failure to wear his seatbelt contributed significantly to his injuries.

The Norman Police Department is asking all drivers and passengers to make good decisions and most importantly, to buckle up. Police say taking just a few seconds to put on your seatbelt could help save your life.
