Father Still Waits For Justice In Young Son's Murder In McLoud

OKLAHOMA CITY -- The trial of a McLoud man who is accused of killing his ex-girlfriend's young son is delayed.

Jason Cline is charged with first degree murder in the death of 3-year-old Cody Paul Chama. The delayed trial date is especially hard on Cody's family. His father, Paul Chama, said it's been a year and a half since the murder and not a day goes by that he doesn't think about his young son.

"He was definitely a daddy's boy," said Paul Chama, Cody's father. "He was the greatest thing that ever happened to me."

Even when Paul divorced from his wife when Cody was only two-years-old, he maintained joint custody, despite living several hours from where Cody lived with his mother in McLoud.

"I was worried, always worried," Paul said. "I missed him constantly when he wasn't with me."

Now, Paul says he's lost, having only pictures and memories of his son. "My worst fears came true," he said.

According to Paul, his ex-wife was living with her ex-boyfriend Jason Cline in October of 2010, when Cody stopped breathing. He was rushed to OU Medical Center on October 5, 2010. He died the next day. Paul said the doctor told him Cody had a brain bleed and his injuries were consistent with child abuse.

Cline was later charged with Cody's murder. During a preliminary hearing in April of 2011, Cody's mother testified that Cline admitted to her that he rubbed her son's face in urine. Paul said his son was potty training at the time and he believes Cody had an accident that set Cline off.

"I'm angry still," said Paul. "I just can't see how a man could do that. As a father, it's unbearable to even think about it."

Cline faces life in prison if convicted. He could also face a death penalty.

"Either way, it's not going to change a thing," said Paul "I'm the one with the life sentence without my child."

However, Paul said he won't let his son's story die. In fact, he hopes to start a foundation one day to help other abused children. For now, though, he's building awareness by telling Cody's story, passing out flyers and bracelets in an effort to stop child abuse while he still waits for justice for Cody.

"If I can save one little kid in the memory of Cody, that would mean the world to me," he said.

Jason Cline's murder trial is scheduled to begin on May 14.
