OBU National Champion Swimmer Dies In Pool Accident

OBU's president announced that Ivan Maciuniak died following an accident in the pool during a normal swimming workout.

SHAWNEE, Oklahoma – Oklahoma Baptist Freshman swimmer Ivan Maciuniak died following an accident in the university's swimming pool on Friday, OBU president David Whitlock announced on his Facebook page.

According to people present at the pool, Maciuniak was swimming when he went underwater and didn't resurface. He was pulled from the pool and received CPR before paramedics arrived.

The paramedics continued the CPR and transported Maciuniak to Unity Hospital North, where he was pronounced dead shortly after 5:15 p.m.

The exact cause of death has not been released. The medical examiner is gathering more information about what happened.

Maciuniak was an All-American in the 50 freestyle, 100 butterfly, 200 free relay team and 400 free relay.

He helped bring home a national championship in the 400-meter relay.

Maciuniak became a member of the OBU swim team in January of this year and was majoring in international business. He was from Las Palmas, Canary Islands, Spain.

Whitlock announced a campus community gathering in the Montgomery Hall Student Lounge on the OBU campus.
