Del City police say a suspect in the death of a 22-month-old girl claimed the child's fatal injuries were an accident.

Police arrested Roderick Jackson, 34, on Monday. He's accused of abusing and killing N'kya Cargile.

According to an affidavit, Jackson told police the child was left alone on a high chest of drawers, and fell off. He said when he entered the bedroom, he found N'kya lying unconscious on the floor. Police said Jackson later changed his story and claimed he suffered a seizure while holding the toddler, and dropped her onto the carpeted floor. He also said he shook the baby.

Jackson said he attempted CPR on N'kya then ran to a neighbor for help. When neither one could revive her, they called 911. The child was rushed to Children's Hospital and died from her injuries Tuesday morning.

Jackson told police he was babysitting the girl and was alone with her.

Police later learned from doctors N'kya suffered multiple injuries including a skull fracture, bleeding on the brain, old and new rib fractures, hemorrhages in her right eye, and abdominal trauma.

Police originally arrested Jackson on a child abuse complaint. After N'kya died, the complaint was upgraded to first-degree murder.

The child's mother, Angela Cargile, was out of town when her daughter was injured and is considered a witness in the case.
