A big birthday bash is being planned at the Oklahoma City Zoo.
Malee, the baby elephant, turns one on Sunday, April 15. She is one of the zoo's most popular residents. And like most babies, has been growing fast.
At birth, Malee weighed in at 304 pounds, but now weighs 1,170 pounds. Malee's first year has been full of growing and learning all kinds of new things.
"She's learning anything between new training, new enrichment, learning the exhibit and just learning how to be an elephant," said Nicky Newbey, Elephant Manager. "Learning how to eat with her trunk and drink through her trunk, dust baths, those kinds of things."
Newbey says she's a quick learner too, already learning more than 25 commands.
Malee's big birthday celebration kicks off at 1 p.m. in the Zoo's Global Plaza with free activities, party favor giveaways and delicious treats provided by local bakeries. The first 2,000 guests can enjoy sweet treats donated by Ingrid's Kitchen, Johnnies Sweet Creations and Bakery, Nothing Bundt Cakes, Sweete Memories, Sugar and Pinkitzel while supplies last.
• A meet-and-greet with Penny, the Zoo's elephant mascot
• Giveaways of stickers, posters and elephant "ears"
• A chance for guests to sign Malee's supersized birthday card
• Free photo memories from the Oklahoma Photobooth Co.
At 1:15 p.m., guests can head down to the free daily elephant presentation for the very special birthday party! Join Zoo staff in singing "Happy Birthday" to Malee and watch as Malee, mom Asha and aunt Chandra enjoy some special, elephant-friendly birthday cupcakes. After the presentation, watch the girls and recent addition Rex enjoy some giant-sized cakes (specially designed for the elephants) in their yards.
