"Me and my wife went out there and found where he was at," said John "Sarge" Hood, Peil's friend. "One of the little girls was calling out, Judy picked her up and brought her back to the pickup."

They took the girls to the hospital. Peil and his wife Kathy were rushed to Amarillo. That's where Peil died.

"It's bad that we lost him, but I'm glad he's not in pain anymore," said Lois Young, Peil's mother-in-law. "I wouldn't bring him back for nothing. But I don't know how we're going to live without him either."

Peil was a Vietnam vet who started the Woodward Vietnam vets' motorcycle club. Monday, members of that group gathered to toast their friend.

"I know he is in a better place. But I would just assume have him around here," Hood said.

A goodbye Peil's wife hasn't gotten to say. She remains in a medically induced Coma.

"She does not know. Doctors don't want her to," Young said.

Peil's two granddaughters also remain in the hospital. But doctors say they will be okay.
