Luther Residents Cope With Heartbreaking Loss After Grassfire

This weekend's devastating wildfire in Luther left some families with nothing.

In the area of 7th and Dogwood, an entire block is gone. These aren't just houses.

The home at the end of the block belonged to the high school girls' basketball coach. On the other end of the block, the home belonged to a firefighter's family.

The focus now turns to helping these folks and keeping more wildfires out.

Flames moved in, destroying a lot in its path fast. Coach Casey Strahan and his neighbors gathered what they could and got out.

"I never thought it would get here," Strahan said.

Sunrise provided the first chance Megan Renner got to see what was left of the block she grew up on.

"This is very devastating for this town," Renner said.

Little brother Logan is getting ready for senior year at Luther high school, just one mile down the road.

"I thought it was going to miss us, now it seems like that didn't happen," he said.

Roger Jackson, like his neighbors, was told to get out.

"Before I know it, there're flames coming and the fire department pulls in and tells me to get out," said Jackson. "I grabbed my dog and start to head down the road and I can't get out the other way the fires crossing the road."

Now, Jackson is counting his blessings and helping his community out anyway he can.

Everyone is pitching in to help out as their neighbors are coping with heartbreaking loss.

"It's all just ash. I look at stuff and it looks like a solid piece, but I kick it over and it's nothing," Coach Strahan said.
