Stars Split Doubleheader With USAO

Oklahoma City University topped USAO 9-0 before suffering a 5-2 setback Thursday at Ann Lacy Stadium.

The Stars, ranked No. 4 in NAIA softball, outhit USAO 17-9 on the day but split the doubleheader to move to 6-4 for the season and 1-1 in Sooner Athletic Conference play.

Angela Lovelady put the Stars on the scoreboard in the bottom of the second inning with a double to right field that plated Jamie Rateliff and made the score 1-0.

Kyndra Holasek and Drew Wright each singled to drive in a run in the bottom of the third to make the score 3-0 in favor of OCU. Rateliff capped the inning with a three-run home run to left field to stretch the Stars' lead to 6-0.

In the bottom of the fourth, LeeAnn Lopez homered to left field and plated three more runs to give the Stars the 9-0 run-rule victory.

Elizabeth Oberst allowed two hits and struck out seven batters in the shut-out win to move to 6-1 on the season.

Lopez and Rateliff drove in three runs apiece to lead the Stars at the dish.

USAO scored first in game No. 2. The Droves plated one run in the top of the third, three in the top of the fourth and one more in the top of the sixth to take a 5-0 lead.

Lopez doubled to left center and drove in Holasek to cut the USAO lead to 5-1 in the bottom of the seventh. Wright reached on an error and Tori Joyner scored to make the score 5-2, but USAO closed the door and took the 5-2 victory.

Oberst allowed four runs on four hits with seven strikeouts in four innings of work. Rachel Penner tossed three innings in relief and struck out one.

Lopez went 3-for-4 with an RBI to lead OCU at the plate.

The Stars will return to action against Newman (Kan.) at 11 a.m. and Missouri Southern at 1 p.m. Saturday at Ann Lacy Stadium.
