Ten metro mothers will join more than 100 other people who all plan to shave their heads this weekend.
VZD's in Oklahoma City will host a St. Baldrick's Foundation signature head-shaving event to raise funds and awareness for life-saving childhood cancer research on Sunday, March 24 at 12:30 p.m.
With a goal of raising $100,000, nearly 140 participants have registered to shave their heads to support the foundation's mission to conquer childhood cancers.
The group 10 Strong – several moms whose children were treated on "10," the 10th floor of Oklahoma University Children's Hospital –will attend the event and shave their heads together. Throughout their children's treatments, the women formed new friendships and bonds, and shaving together will solidify their union and fight against cancer.
"It's nice to be able to be with a group that has the same goals and passions as you do," said Beth McDowell.
Beth is the mom of 2-year old Mia McDowell.
In just her short time here, Mia has fought stage 4 Neuroblastoma. The cancerous tumor in her abdomen had spread to her legs, chest and spine. She's been through 6 rounds of chemo and 5 surgeries, and although she's cancer free today, but there's still a 50-50 chance of relapsing; and if that happens the odds aren't good.
"Just watching your baby go through that. You have to stay strong and fight every single day," said Beth.
Worldwide, a child is diagnosed with cancer every three minutes, and one in five children diagnosed in the U.S. will not survive.
The St. Baldrick's Foundation is a volunteer-driven and donor-centered charity dedicated to raising money for childhood cancer research and funding the most promising research initiatives to find cures. As the largest private funder of childhood cancer research grants, the foundation hosts signature head-shaving events where volunteers collect pledges and then shave their heads in solidarity with children fighting cancer.
"10 Strong" is also selling t-shirts and bracelets to help raise money for St. Baldricks. To purchase one or to find out more information you can go to www.10strong.bigcartel.com or go to www.facebook.com/10strongforacure.
