Del City Police: Two Accused Of Trading Drugs For Food Stamps

Del City Police conducted a raid at an apartment complex early Wednesday morning, arresting two people accused of welfare fraud by trading marijuana for food stamps.

Around 4:30 a.m., a SWAT team forced its way into an upstairs apartment in the 3000 block of Hillside Drive, just off Bryant near S.E. 29th Street. Police say they seized one quarter pound of marijuana, $600 in cash and 19 government-issued cell phones that are supposed to be given out through a federal government program.

Officers arrested two people; 31-year-old Sherray Curry and 33-year-old Tramell Wilson.

Police also found five children inside the apartment between the ages of 14 and 2. All five children were placed in DHS custody.

Police began investigating Curry and Wilson in December 2012. They say the two would trade marijuana and money for food access cards, purchasing the cards for about half their worth. They would then use those cards to buy groceries. Police say Curry also set up a small store inside her apartment, using the groceries she illegally purchased.

Police say after Curry and Wilson used the card, they would give it back to the legal owner and the process would start again.

Both Curry and Wilson are being held on several complaints, including food stamp trafficking, possession of marijuana with intent, distribution of marijuana, possession of drug proceeds, and child neglect.
