An 8-year-old child died and a driver was arrested on Labor Day when an SUV crossed into oncoming traffic and hit two other vehicles on a highway in Norman.

Norman Police say around 2:50 p.m. Monday, the driver of a Ford Escape, later identified as 29-year-old Kimberly Wenthold, was traveling east on State Highway 9 near 168th Avenue S.E. when the vehicle crossed the center of the road, causing a collision with a Ford Explorer and a Dodge Ram pickup hauling a boat.

Six people were hurt in the crash. Eight-year-old Cadence Gordon, a passenger in the Ford Explorer, was flown from the scene by an air ambulance to a hospital, but died from her injuries.

The highway was closed for five hours while police investigated the crash and cleared away the wreckage.

Wenthold was arrested and booked into the F. Dewayne Beggs Detention Center for first-degree manslaughter and driving under the influence.
