Mean and hateful comments! Oklahoma high school kids are being attacked through Twitter and school officials are taking notice.

A case of cyber bullying is raising some serious concerns at school districts in central Oklahoma. Students at Seminole High School say Twitter posts are causing fights in the hallways.

The cyber bullying is also spreading like a virus to other area high schools. It's an effort to dish dirt and spread rumors. Sexually explicit comments have been lighting up computer screens from Shawnee to Prague, Seminole and beyond.

"It becomes very difficult to investigate," said Supt. Marc Moore with Shawnee Public Schools.

Moore says parents are the best line of defense. Moore and other school officials say they are actively investigating the current cyber bullying case.

When complaints about bullying are made to Twitter, accounts may be blocked. However, it doesn't take much make a new account. In Seminole, students are now standing up against bullying and taking action.

"My family has been hit hard by bullying in the workplace and school," said Seminole sophomore Patrick Cowart. "I feel that I could help my fellow students and people in our community by getting the word out there."

Patrick says he is one of the victims of the current attack. He works with an organization to help prevent bullying because he knows -- words do hurt.

The victims in the tweets have been identified by their initials. Since News 9 first learned about this cyber bullying case, seven new accounts have been created.

Seminole Public Schools did not return News 9's request for comment Thursday. According to government statistics, 42 percent of children report being bullied online.
