Investigators in Lincoln County have a mystery on their hands after human remains are found in a field east of Chandler.
Those human remains were found just beyond a locked gate, west of Highway 66 and Airport Road, and they may help investigators with a missing persons case.
In October 2010, a wrecked car was found nearby, but the driver was never found and has been missing ever since.
He has been identified as 44-year-old Daniel Kevin McGhee.
Now, investigators are trying to determine if the bones found in the field, near where his car was found all those years ago, are his.
"I contacted Mr. McGhee's dad last night and talked with his wife today," said Lincoln County Sheriff Charlie Dougherty. "So we are just following some things up. We hope that's what it turns out to be."
The sheriff said the skeletal remains found in this field east of the Chandler Walmart were actually discovered Monday night by a man searching for mushrooms. Monday night's rain hampered the search, so the scene was secured. Tuesday, investigators returned to the scene and were seen digging in the field, marking off the evidence.
They found a shoe and other bones there, which may ultimately help them solve this missing persons case.
"Of course the skull, the jawbone, probably somewhere around 15 different bones including an arm and leg were found here," said Sheriff Dougherty. "We've had several manhunts in this area. First time we've ever actually found something."
Those remains have been removed from the field and taken to the medical examiners office, who will hopefully be able to make the positive identification.
Both the Lincoln County Sheriff's Office and the OSBI are investigating this case.
We will keep you posted when the identification is made.
