A Lincoln County man is in jail after investigators say he broke into a fire station and stole a fire truck early Friday morning.
Investigators say Brett McVeigh broke open a utility room door to the Southwest Lincoln County Fire Department near Wellston at 12:51 a.m. Friday. There is surveillance video.
Investigators say McVeigh made several phone calls from the fire department. He was looking for a ride home. When no one volunteered to help him, investigators say he lifted open the garage door to the fire station and drove away in a brush pumper.
The fire chief says they leave the keys in the brush pumpers, but always lock the building. McVeigh drove the brush pumper to a location in Midwest City. He then walked away.
As it turns out, one of the people McVeigh called for help from the fire station near Wellston, called authorities. Lincoln County Detective Larry Stover found McVeigh walking in Midwest City, a quarter-mile from where he left the fire truck late Friday morning.
"He was very cooperative. He told me he broke into the fire station and he needed a ride. His first words were he ‘borrowed' the truck," he said.
McVeigh is in the Lincoln County Jail. He is facing felony 2nd degree burglary and grand theft auto charges.
