One of two dogs rescued after being locked in a cage inside a Midwest City apartment has died.

Midwest City Police were called to the Willow Creek Apartments on July 11 were they found two dogs locked in a cage inside a vacant apartment. Both dogs were severely malnourished for what police believe could have been more than a month.

Payton and Sarge, as they are now known, were taken in by the Bella Foundation to evaluate and get medical treatment.

Payton, the older of the two dogs, is doing well and is getting better every day. Sarge had more medical issues and was not able to win his battle. Midwest City Police told News 9 that he passed on Monday.

The owner of the dogs, Corey Harrison, admitted he left the animals in his old apartment because they needed to be bathed. Midwest City Police are waiting on a warrant and plan to charge Harrison with two counts of animal abuse.
