Three gunmen are still on the run after holding up a northwest Oklahoma City convenience store and shooting at people during their getaway. On Tuesday night News 9 heard from one woman who was right across the street when bullets started flying.
It happened at the corner of NW 23rd and Land Ave. last Tuesday, right across the street from the convenience store that was hit. Brooks Ballenger pulled up to drop off her rent check at the nearby real estate company when she noticed the three robbers running out. She then says she saw one of them pull a gun on her and shoot.
“That bullet should have come straight to me,” said Ballenger. “He was looking right at me when he raised it. It should have gone straight to my car. And I think that's what took me a second to…realize it didn't hit anything, I didn't hear anything.”
Ballenger is still in shock over what happened to her last week, but she can remember every detail.
“He looked in the door, walked back to his car, looked right at me, pointed the gun…and shot one time,” recalls Ballenger. “So it took me a second to realize that really was a gunshot, you know? So I just leaned over, and when I saw the spark, I said, ‘OK that's real.'”
The incident left a bullet hole in the side of her car. Ballenger says when she stepped on the gas to leave the scene, she heard even more gunshots, but had no idea one of them had actually hit so close to the gas tank; just feet away from where her young children normally sit!
“I just pulled up to the wrong place at the wrong time,” said Ballenger.
This young mother is just thankful her 2-year-old daughter and two sons were not with her. And she says she feels like the hand of God came down and blocked the bullets. When she saw the surveillance video that was released on Monday, Ballenger says she could identify exactly which one of the three shot her.
“When I saw him I was like, ‘There he is! That's the one! With the white sleeves! That's the one that shot at me,'” said Ballenger.
Now as she plays with her daughter, she realizes how lucky she really was. She just hopes someone recognizes the young men in the video and turns them in.
“I want them to get caught,” said Ballenger. “I mean, you can't go around doing stuff like that, you know? You not only robbed someone, you almost took a mother of three, my life, for no reason!”
