The search is on for the bicycle bandit.
He's accused of rolling up, pulling out a gun, and demanding money.
Store clerks said the suspect, a regular at May Discount Tobacco and Food on S. May, usually drives a red pick-up. This time he came through the drive-thru on a mountain bike, and what happened next had them afraid for their lives.
Police called it a bizarre crime.
Officers said the man rode up to the store Sunday around 5 a.m.
He asked the clerk for cigarettes and soda, then pointed a gun through the drive-thru window and said, "Give me the money."
“Our clerk said that he feared for his life, complied with what the suspect was asking, did everything right in this case,” said OCPD Sgt. Jennifer Wardlow.
The clerk told police he was afraid the frequent customer was going to shoot.
He grabbed a handful of money and handed it over. The suspect took the cash, and made a quick getaway on his bike.
“For him to be on a bicycle, ride away on his bicycle is rather unusual,” said Sgt. Wardlow.
Police said the suspect seemed nervous and may have been under the influence.
The store clerks and the owner were too scared to talk us. Investigators hope someone recognizes the man and comes forward.
