A bank employee at the First American Bank in Purcell stole tens of thousands from elderly customers and has been convicted on five counts of embezzlement.
Pamela McCurdy worked as a Customer Service Representative at the bank, and between January 2008 and August 2010 she stole more than $86,000 from customers.
According to the federal indictment McCurdy targeted customers "who were elderly and less likely to notice unauthorized withdrawals from their bank account, including Individual Retirement Accounts."
The indictment goes on to say in some cases she forged customers' signatures. In others she used false pretenses to cause a customer to execute blank debit tickets that she later used for unauthorized withdrawals.
“When you deal with a bank for 20 years and deal with the same person, you just become trusting,” said Riley McGregor, one of McCurdy's victims. “Whatever they ask you to sign, you just sign it.”
McGregor says McCurdy stole $25,500 from his retirement account and he figured out what was happening when he noticed it wasn't going to last as long as he thought it would. He reported it to the Norman Branch of the First American Bank.
The FBI started investigating, and in August McCurdy was convicted. She was sentenced in December and has to pay restitution to her victims but won't face jail time.
Anyone who believes they were a victim of McCurdy but was not part of the case is asked to contact the FBI.
