A couple visiting the state learns the man suspected of stealing their car along with the ashes of their baby is no stranger to police.

Last year alone, Cory Goodner was accused of stealing at least seven cars and he's been in and out of jail.

Oklahoma County D.A. David Prater said Goodner and his lawyer have been fighting jail time. But this guy has a lengthy criminal record.

That couple visiting out of state said they had no idea they were dealing with a serial offender.

“When they stole my car, they basically stole my life,” said victim Melissa Brown back in May of 2014.

After an already long streak of bad luck, last May, Melissa Brown and her husband walked outside and couldn't find their white Ford Taurus.

“We don't know what to do from here,” said Brown.

Their car was stolen allegedly by 28-year-old Cory Goodner, and investigators said Goodner has been in the car stealing business for quite some time now.

“He stole two cars in May, and then five cars in July,” said Prater.

And that was just last year. Prater said he's been following Goodner's case.

“He's the type of guy that we want to put in prison for a long period of time, and that's what we're trying to do,” said Prater.

Prater said he's recommending Goodner be put in jail for at least 10 years.

“He shouldn't have been released,” said Brown. “He shouldn't be on the street at all.”

At the time, everything Melissa and her husband owned was in the car Goodner is accused of stealing, including the ashes of her baby.

“That box meant the world to me. My husband and I really had meant to scatter his ashes before all of this happened,” said Brown.

Goodner allegedly used a tow truck to haul off the car, which police said is often done to cash in on scrap metal.

“They didn't stop him by arresting him at all,” said Brown.

Melissa's car was recovered not too long after it was stolen, and the ashes of her baby were found.

Goodner has been out of jail since his last arrest in November. He's scheduled to appear in court next month for a number a charges, including several auto thefts.
