Ten people who live in a northwest Oklahoma City apartment complex escaped after an apartment unit went up in flames early Friday morning.

It happened around 1 a.m. Firefighters said there were heavy flames and smoke pouring from a balcony of an apartment near Portland and N.W. 54th St. Inside that specific unit, two people and two pets were inside when they noticed the glow of the fire through their window.

Firefighters said it could have been a lot worse, especially since they didn't appear to be any working smoke detectors.

In total, four people are currently displaced. The damage estimate is more than $24,000.

A fire investigator will be on scene later to figure out a cause.
