A 52-year-old Oklahoma City man was charged Friday with felony bigamy in Oklahoma County court. Prosecutors and the Oklahoma County Clerk told News 9 it was the first time someone's been charged with this exact offense in many years.

Bigamy is being married to more than one woman at the same time. Vera Hines said she's been legally married to her husband David Hines since 2002. She said they split up four years later, but said they never filed for divorce because she said David Hines wouldn't help pay for it and she said they remained intimate at times.

Vera went to Norman police last July after seeing wedding photos of David and another woman on Facebook. Vera was angry she said because she and her husband had just been intimate at her Norman apartment a few days before.

Court records showed David Hines was married to another woman in May of 2012.

“I feel sorry for her because he has her brainwashed,” Vera Hines said Friday, of the other woman. “He has her believing he never married me.” David Hines' Attorney Erik Motsinger said his client and Vera Hines at one time were 'Common Law' husband and wife, but were never legally married.

He said Vera Hines has been harassing his client for money, and he looks forward to defending David Hines in court.

Saturday morning, Attorney Erik Motsinger contacted News 9 to clarify what he told News 9's Steve Shaw Friday night. "What I intended to say is there is an affidavit of common law marriage. But we do not believe they were even common law married."
