A smash and grab thief targeted parents at a busy Edmond gymnastics center.
While the parents watched their kids practice inside, someone was breaking into their cars in the parking lot.
At least three vehicles were broken into Thursday around 7 p.m. at Oklahoma Gold Gymnastics.
Grayson, 4, was practicing gymnastic moves when a thief pulled a fast one on her mom's SUV.
“I couldn't step anywhere where there was glass,” said Grayson.
Grayson and her mom were at Oklahoma Gold Gymnastics near 33rd Street and Kelly Avenue when someone broke into their vehicle.
“I knew exactly what had happened and then I had to think what was there and it was a makeup bag that someone must have mistaken for a purse,” Kirsten McIntyre explained.
She quickly realized her SUV was one of three vehicles burglarized.
All three had the passenger side window broken and a purse or bag stolen.
“That parking lot is very busy, there are parents who are constantly coming in and out and I'm really quite surprised someone was that brazen to break into three vehicles,” said McIntyre.
The gym immediately sent a letter to customers saying "We want to remind everyone to please not leave anything visible that's valuable in your vehicles. Unfortunately, it can be an invitation to criminals while your vehicle is unattended."
“They had hard hands to break the window with a big hand,” Grayson explained to News 9.
McIntyre said she knew not to leave anything in sight that could entice a thief, even if it was not a valuable, and she definitely will not make that mistake again.
“They're not going to take time to really look around and go, ‘Oh that's just a makeup bag,'” McIntyre said. “To them, it looks like a purse, a bag with valuables in it and they are just going to smash and grab and that's exactly what they did last night,” she added.
The owner of Oklahoma Gold Gymnastics said he is paying for all three victims to get their windows fixed and throwing in a free class for their children.
He said he is trying to be helpful in a helpless situation.
If you know who is responsible, call Edmond Police Department.
