Metro Salt Trucks Ready For Winter Weather

The metro is already preparing for the anticipated winter blitz. Oklahoma City crews started getting ready Sunday afternoon to prep the trucks to treat the roads.

About 15 salt trucks were lined up and equipped to take on whatever the weather brings.

"Drivers are checking their trucks, making any last minute preparations, getting our gates and spreaders set in the right settings in our plows, and just making sure there are no issues before we get started," said Marc Holland, Oklahoma City Field Operations Supervisor.

City crews started as early as Friday getting their trucks in gear, and they're closely watching the weather forecast to know which areas to treat first.

“First thing that's going to ice over are the bridges and overpasses and those are all within our emergency snow routes, so we'll be taking care of those," Holland said.

Each truck can hold nine tons of salt, which the city isn't afraid to use to clear up any slick spots throughout the metro. The drivers only advise that everyone on the roads stay back at least 100 feet.

"Please give us enough room to do our job, and if you don't have to be out, you probably shouldn't be. Give us a chance to get the roads clear," Holland said.

At midnight, there will be 30 salt truck drivers arriving, and depending on the weather, additional crews are on-call and will come in.
