Wintry Weather Closes Schools, Causes Slick Road Conditions In Oklahoma

Another round of wintry weather brought freezing rain and snow across the state Sunday night into early Monday morning, causing slick and hazardous road conditions statewide. Many Oklahoma schools have also canceled or delayed classes for the day.

According to the National Weather Service, a number of Oklahoma counties remains under a Winter Storm Warning until noon on Monday, including Adair, Craig, Creek, Delaware, Mayes, Muskgoee, Nowata, Okmulgee, Osage, Ottawa, Rogers, Sequoyah, Tulsa, Wagoner and Washington.

According to the Oklahoma Department of Transportation, slick and hazardous conditions are reported in eastern and south central Oklahoma with conditions improving and road drying out in western Oklahoma and northwestern Oklahoma. Slick spots remain throughout the state and crews continue to apply sand and salt to bridges and problem areas. 

Unnecessary travel is still discouraged at this time in eastern and northeastern Oklahoma where winter precipitation continues. ODOT crews continue to plow and treat highways with salt and sand, and caution drivers to be alert to these operations.

Crews in the Oklahoma City and Tulsa metro areas report slick spots and dangerous conditions on bridges and overpasses. Conditions are improving statewide, but slick spots remain. If travel is necessary, drivers should prepare for slow driving conditions and use extreme caution. They should allow extra space between vehicles so there is adequate distance for braking, and also go slow when entering or exiting a highway, according to ODOT.

If drivers travel out of state, they are urged to check area road conditions before heading out.

Multiple accidents have been reported across the Oklahoma City metro area, including one where a semi-truck jackknifed in the eastbound lanes of I-40 at Peebly Rd.

At about 8:30 a.m., Storm Tracker Val Castor reported that traffic completely stopped on I-35 northbound near 2nd street in Edmond, after two semi-trucks became stuck on icy roadways. 

According to EMSA, as of 11:30 a.m., emergency crews have responded to 17 crashes, 12 slips and falls, and one cold exposure incident. 

Several school districts in Oklahoma have already decided to cancel classes for the day, including Oklahoma City Public Schools, Edmond Public Schools, El Reno Public Schools, and more.
