Wintry Weather Closes Schools Across Oklahoma

As another round of wintry weather moves across the state, many Oklahoma school districts have already canceled classes on Monday.

According to the National Weather Service in Norman, a Winter Weather Advisory is under effect until 6 p.m. Monday for most of the states, including Oklahoma, Lincoln, Canadian counties, and more.

Ada Public Schools, Woodward Public Schools, and McAlester Public Schools are among the schools districts that canceled classes for the day.

Oklahoma City Public Schools has canceled all after-school and evening activities for Monday. To ensure bus pick-ups for middle and elementary school students are on time, only the OKCPS high schools will dismiss 25 minutes early at 2 p.m.

Edmond and Norman public schools officials said parents/guardians who desire to keep students home or check them out early because of concerns about weather may do so. Absences/early checkouts are being excused. 

Edmond school officials said they have canceled all after-school activities and practices.

Meteorologists said an area of snow will expand over north Texas and southern and central Oklahoma Monday morning. Most locations south of I-40 will see less than two inches of snow. But a heavier band will be possible near a line from Lawton and Pauls Valley to Ada, where three to four inches of snow will be possible. Snow will end from west to east during Monday afternoon.

According to the Weather Service, accumulating sleet is expected across far southern Oklahoma parts of western, north Texas on Monday. Many roads across far southern Oklahoma are already slick, and officials expect conditions to deteriorate even more on Monday.

It's a really cold and windy start to Monday morning. Here in the Oklahoma City metro area, sleet and light snow started falling at about 4 a.m. This will continue and transition over to light snow with one to two inches of accumulations for central Oklahoma through mid-afternoon.

The majority of snow/sleet will fall south of I-40 and north of the Red River in southern Oklahoma. We are as warm as we will get with 24 degrees.

We have cloudy skies and northeast wind Monday morning 15-25 mph, decreasing to 10-20 mph later.

According to the Oklahoma Department of Transportation, salt and sand operations continue statewide this morning, particularly in the panhandle, central, southwestern and southeastern areas of the state as slick spots remain on roadways. Oklahoma Department of Transportation crews are reporting slick bridges and roads on I-35 from Purcell south to the Texas state line and along US-69 from the Eufaula area to the Red River. Travel in these areas is discouraged.

Drivers must use caution if travel is necessary, especially on bridges, overpasses and ramps. Watch for black ice, which is ice that can appear wet but is very slick. If travel is necessary, drivers must take it very slow as some visibility is limited due to precipitation continuing in areas statewide. Trucks will be out as long as conditions warrant.

Oklahoma City metro crews are treating areas of moderate snowfall and slick spots in Oklahoma, Canadian, Cleveland and Kingfisher counties. Tulsa metro crews are treating slick spots in some areas and monitoring roadways and bridges in several counties surrounding the metro area.

Be sure to drive for the conditions and stay at least 200 feet behind road clearing equipment. If drivers must travel out of state, they are urged to check area road conditions before heading out.

Between approximately 8 a.m. and 1:10 p.m., Oklahoma City police said they responded to 48 non-injury accidents and 15 injury accidents. As of approximately 1 p.m., Oklahoma City police are no longer working non-injury wrecks. If you're involved in one, you are asked to get your vehicles off the roadway (if possible) and exchange info with the other driver(s).
