A much-talked about construction project in Norman is about to get underway. We're talking about work at I-35 and State Highway 9, as well as I-35 and Lindsey Street.

It is one of the most heavily-traveled intersections in the metro, particularly on game days when drivers exit I-35 and take Lindsey or Highway 9 in to Norman.

But over the years, it also has gotten a reputation for being incredibly dangerous. Norman police said from January 2010 to February 2012, there were 22 crashes on a 2-mile stretch of Highway 9. Three of those were deadly.

To address some of the traffic issues and potential dangers, ODOT will spend about $71 million to fix the north half of the I-35 and Highway 9 interchange, and reconstruct the bridge at Lindsey Street. It's supposed to take about two years to complete and widen I-35 to six lanes from Main Street to the Canadian River.

Thursday night's meeting will take place at the Sooner Legends Inn and Suites in Norman. It starts at 6 p.m.

ODOT said at least two lanes of I-35 in both direction will stay open. But at night there may be some lanes and ramps closed.
