Investigators with the Canadian County Sheriff's Office arrested a father and son this week in connection to a series of thefts of property from Mustang Public Schools.

Melvin Hibbs, 55, and Kyle Matthew Hibbs, 27, both of Blanchard, were jailed on charges relating to stolen school property after investigators with the Sheriff's Office determined Hibbs and his son, were in possession of numerous items belonging to Mustang Public Schools.

An investigation began, when Mustang Police Chief Chuck Foley contacted the Sheriff's Office with preliminary information about the thefts.

"Not knowing whether the thefts originated from one of the schools in Mustang city limits, Chief Foley contacted my office, and inquired if we would be willing to take the case since all the schools fall within the Sheriff's jurisdiction," said Randall Edwards, Canadian County Sheriff.

Upon opening the case, investigators quickly determined the thefts originated from a storage building at the high school campus, and most likely included computers, a carpet shampooer, and other supplies used in the daily support function of a public school operation.

Investigators focused their attention on Melvin Hibbs, the district plumber for Mustang Schools, and his son, Kyle.

Investigators were able to secure a search warrant for Kyle Hibbs' residence after the investigation indicated that school property would be located inside his apartment.

Kyle Hibbs was taken into custody at his residence in Blanchard on Wednesday morning after a search warrant was executed at his apartment. Multiple items belonging to Mustang Public Schools were recovered from the residence.

Hibbs was transported to the McClain County Jail charged with Receiving Stolen Property.

Melvin Hibbs surrendered himself to authorities after cooperating with investigators, by providing a full confession to the thefts; including how he stole the items, and where they were stored.

"Not only did Mr. Hibbs confess to the thefts, but he told my investigators that he didn't feel too bad about stealing the equipment, because his salary wasn't very good for a plumber," Edwards said.

Melvin Hibbs was booked into the Canadian County Jail on four counts of Grand Larceny, and one count of Receiving and Concealing Stolen Property. His bond was set at $6,500. Melvin Hibbs was released Thursday evening after he was able to post bond.

Kyle Hibbs remains in the McClain County Jail, with his bond set at $40,000.
