A reported suspicious device thrown in a trash can prompted an evacuation in northwest Oklahoma City, Thursday evening.

Police evacuated a one block radius around the Shell gas station, located near NW 16th St. and N. Portland Ave., after it was reported that suspicious device started a fire in an outside trash can. Authorities shut down Portland Ave. for about an hour in the area while the bomb squad investigated.

After the investigation, police said no threat was found.

Police confirmed Friday morning that it was a small object that exploded near or in the dumpster, causing the dumpster to catch fire.

No injuries were reported and no apparent damage was caused. So far police have not identified the person who allegedly threw that device in the bin.

The department's bomb squad unit continue to investigate this incident.
