Fire near Shawnee destroys church Monday

A grassfire engulfed an area on Garrett Lake Road near Shawnee on Monday, burning through a church and a nearby structure, said fire department authorities.

A grassfire destroyed the Sallateeska Baptist Church, two church vans and a nearby structure, fire officials said. There were no reports of injuries.

Authorities said flames on Garrett Lake Road in Shawnee engulfed the church, the vans and another nearby structure. 

About 25 acres of nearby grassland was charred.

The fire, in northeast Shawnee near the Lincoln County line, is contained and being extinguished by Shawnee, Earlsboro and Meeker fire fighters.

A wind advisory was in effect for much of the state Monday, with many areas reporting gusts to more than 30 miles per hour with high temperatures in the 70s.
