Former political leader opposes Ford Center vote

Some state leaders are endorsing a 'yes' vote on March 4. But one former state leader is doing just the opposite.

Wanda Jo Stapleton doesn't think taxpayers should foot the bill for renovations at the Ford Center that may help bring a big-league team here. She's making it a full-time job calling eligible voters and asking for a vote "no" on Mar. 4.

"A sales tax is so regressive," Stapleton said. "It even requires people who are hungry to pay an additional one percent on their groceries and utilities and they're paying it for what I call "maps for millionaires."

Stapleton is also using yard signs to get her message out. The Governor said the tax is a step toward growth for the city.

"We're getting all sorts of great events in Oklahoma City. This is another step in that progression to keep the momentum going," Henry said.

Former governors Keating and Nigh are also supporting the March 4 vote that would extend a penny sales tax within the city. The tax is meant to help fund Ford Center renovations that may help lure the Sonics to Oklahoma City.

Stapleton said she has a host of volunteers who will continue making calls telling voters to vote no until polls close next Tuesday night.

Members of the opposition group have planned a news conference for Friday morning at the state Capitol.

The group will present what they say is significant material in the hopes of swaying voters to their way.
