As storm season approaches, emergency personnel would like to know where everyone's storm shelter is located. That's why cities are putting together a registration list of resident's storm shelters.

The city of Altus is asking their residents to call 211 and register their storm shelters. Altus Emergency Management Director Lloyd Colston said a registration list is important for rescuers.

"It will tell us who has a storm cellar, so if a storm comes, knocks down the building, we know where to send for a rescue," Colston said.

All week 211 operators will help people living in Altus and Lawton by taking calls and putting together a registration of all the storm cellars in both cities.

"The idea is to get the citizens to tell us where they are, to be proactive in their own rescue," Colston said.

Southwest Oklahoma 211 will be taking shelter registration calls all week from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m.

Oklahoma City has a similar program where residents can call the Action Center to register their storm shelters.

Edmond residents can also register their shelters. They can find information on They can call Edmond's Emergency Management Department if they have questions.
