The slowing economy is taking a toll on our four legged friends, animal rescue workers said.

Animal rescue services are finding a growing number of abandoned pets, they said.

A Forest Park homeowner with 11 Rottweilers moved out about a month ago when the bank foreclosed on the home. The dogs were left to fend for themselves, said local area animal rescue workers.

"Unfortunately we're seeing more and more of this happening across the country. And shelters and rescue groups are just becoming overwhelmed with these animals that have no place to go," said Kristi Walker, a Rottweiler rescue worker.

The dogs were taken to Safe Haven Animal Rescue Center for possible adoption. If you're interested in helping call Safe Haven at 733-4452.
